Performance Improvement of Decision Based Un - symmetric Trimmed Midpoint Filter for Removing High Density Salt and Pepper Noise

Volume 2, Issue 3 May – June 2013 Page 254 AbstractTransmission of digital images is a major method of communication in the modern age, but the image obtained after transmission is often corrupted with salt and pepper noise. Some processing needs to be done on the transmitted images before it can be used in applications. Image denoising involves the manipulation of the image data to produce a visually high quality image. Although selection of the denoising algorithm is application dependent, filtering approach has been proved to be the best when the image is corrupted with salt and pepper noise. This paper presents a new algorithm to remove high density salt and pepper noise. New algorithm is an improved filter; it is an enhancement over the existing Decision Based Un-symmetric Trimmed Midpoint Filter. Improved filter gives better performance than existing Salt & Pepper Noise removal algorithms, such as Median filter, Adaptive median filter, Decision based unsymmetric trimmed median filter, Modified decision based un-symmetric trimmed median filter, Decision based unsymmetric trimmed midpoint filter. A quantitative measure of comparison is provided by the peak signal to noise ratio of the existing algorithms with the proposed algorithm.
