Airborne laser scanning is used to generate topographic maps with accuracies on the decimeter level. Recent studies of the Optech ALTM 3100 Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper system demonstrate that this instrument is capable of relative accuracies on the sub-decimeter level. The limiting factors in obtaining absolute sub-decimeter accuracies are the GPS and INS systems that are required to provide absolute position and orientation during flight.
