One highly desirable function of a diffraction grating is its ability to deflect incident light into a specific diffraction order with near-perfect efficiency. While such asymmetry can be achieved in a variety of ways, e.g., by using a sawtooth (blazed) geometry, a recently emerged approach is to use a planar metagrating comprised of designer multi-resonant periodic units (metamolecules). Here we demonstrate that a bianisotropic unit cell supporting four resonances interfering in the far field…

Photonic spin Hall effect mediated by bianisotropy.

Asymmetric all Silicon Micro-Antenna Array for High Angle Beam Bending in Terahertz Band

Phase mapping of metasurfaces with a finite number of elements is popular in wavefront manipulation. However, in high angle beam bending, the efficiency of bending beams drastically drops, which will…

Controlling the polarization of light with efficient and ultra-thin devices is desirable for a myriad of optical systems. Bianisotropic metasurfaces offer a promising alternative to conventional…

Bianisotropy and Magnetism in Plasmonic Gratings

We present a simple design to achieve bianisotropy at visible wavelengths: an ultrathin plasmonic grating made of a gold grating covered by a thin flat layer of gold. We show experimentally and…

Large-Angle, Multifunctional Metagratings Based on Freeform Multimode Geometries.

It is shown that silicon-based metagratings capable of large-angle, multifunctional performance can be realized using inverse freeform design, and envisioned that inverse design will enable new classes of high-performance photonic systems and new strategies toward the nanoscale control of light fields.

Broadband omnidirectional antireflection coating based on subwavelength surface Mie resonators

A two-dimensional periodic array of subwavelength silicon nanocylinders designed to possess strongly substrate-coupled Mie resonances yields almost zero total reflectance over the entire spectral range from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared.

Design and fabrication of blazed binary diffractive elements with sampling periods smaller than the structural cutoff

We report here on the theoretical performance of blazed binary diffractive elements composed of pillars carefully arranged on a two-dimensional grid whose period is smaller than the structural…

All-dielectric metasurface analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency.

It is shown that the dielectric metasurfaces can be engineered to confine the optical field in either the silicon resonator or the environment, allowing one to tailor light-matter interaction at the nanoscale.

The Fano-resonant silicon metasurface results in strong near-field enhancement within the volume of the silicon resonator while minimizing two photon absorption and results in transmission modulation with a modulation depth of 36%.
