Introduction: During 1927 and 1990, Potrerillos and El Salvador mines dumped over 200 megatons of mining waste in the Chañaral bay, creating a 10-kilometer-long (about 6.2 miles) artificial beach covering an area of 4 square kilometers (1.5 sq. miles). Due to this Chañaral was classified by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1983 as one of the most serious cases of marine pollution in the Pacific.
