In this contribution first results of experiments on pedestrian flow through bottlenecks are presented and then compared to simulation results obtained with the Social Force Model in the Vissim simulation framework. Concerning the experiments it is argued that the basic dependence between flow and bottleneck width is not a step function but that it is linear and modified by the effect of a psychological phenomenon. The simulation results as well show a linear dependence and the parameters can…

Multi-Directional Flow as Touch-Stone to Assess Models of Pedestrian Dynamics
- Environmental ScienceArXiv
- 2012
It is shown how the symmetry which exists in the achiral geometry of the proposed example scenario is broken in particular simulation runs exhibiting chiral dynamics, while in the statistics of 1,000 simulation runs there is a symmetry between left- and right-chiral dynamics.
Microscopic Traffic Flow Simulator VISSIM

A spatially continuous force-based model for simulating pedestrian dynamics is introduced which includes an elliptical volume exclusion of pedestrians and shows good agreement with empirical data obtained in controlled experiments.
How to calibrate a pedestrian simulation model: An investigation into how the choices of scenarios and metrics influence the calibration

It was concluded that it matters what scenarios and metrics are included during the calibration of pedestrian simulation models and that one should calibrate a pedestrian model based on its intended usage.

The results indicate that the basic assumption of the capacity estimation for bottlenecks has to be revised and that a jam occurs even if the incoming flow does not overstep the capacity defined by the maximum flow according to the fundamental diagram.
