Paul Karrer was born of Swiss parents on 21 April 1889 in Moscow where his father practised as a dentist. The family originated from Teufenthal and Oberentfelden in the canton of Aargau. They returned to Switzerland in 1892 and lived for the first three years in Erlenbach near Zurich.
