We describe the patterns of spatial distribution and behaviour of an intertidal fish assemblage on a rocky intertidal platform in the south of Portugal during high tide. Data were col- lected by surveying a number of predefined transects and focal observations of individual fish. Sev- eral interspecific differences, in both zonation and substratum, were found at high tide that were not apparent in observations of pools at low tide. Parablennius sanguinolentus occurred mainly on boul- ders at…

Intertidal and subtidal blennies: assessment of their habitat through individual and nest distribution
Resident and transitory intertidal fish species are expected to differ in their utilization of space in the intertidal zone. Here we assessed fish zonation patterns on 2 rocky shores of the
Tidal activity rhythms and depth distribution of rocky shore fish in an altered intertidal environment
TLDR
These observations support the studies of Gibson (1971), who showed that changes in hydrostatic pressure were of prime importance in keeping the tidal rhythm entrained, and the hypothesis that some subtidal species are excluded from the intertidal by a turbulence-avoiding mechanism is discussed.
Tidal influences on fish distributions on tropical eastern Pacific rocky shores (Colombia)
TLDR
To examine the responses of shallow-water reef fish assemblages to tidal water level changes in a macrotidal area of the tropical eastern Pacific, daytime underwater visual fish surveys were carried out in intertidal and subtidal zones at different tidal stages in Utria National Park, Colombia.
Use of the intertidal zone by mobile predators: influence of wave exposure, tidal phase and elevation on abundance and diet
TLDR
The study indicates the importance of crabs as key intertidal predators and the strong trophic linkages between the subtidal and intert tidal zones, which is likely to be a key factor influencing community structure on European shores.
Community structure and height distribution of intertidal rockpool fish in
Tide cycles determine the ecological complexity and environmental dynamics observed in the intertidal habitats. Intertidal dwellers show particular patterns of distribution with abrupt changes even
Habitat Selection by the Rock Gunnel, Pholis gunnellus L. (Pholidae)
Abstract Pholis gunnellus (Rock Gunnel) is an amphibious fish found along North Atlantic coastlines. Remaining above the waterline at low tide and breathing air, it is ecologically unusual and is a
Rocky intertidal fish assemblage of the Watamu Marine National Park, Kenya (Western Indian Ocean)
TLDR
This study suggests that the rocky intertidal contributes greatly to adjacent subtidal reef fish populations, which may support continuing local fisheries commerce through spillover of valuable species into the fishable waters.
Foraging ecology of a large opportunistic predator (adult Lateolabrax latus) on a temperate-subtropical rocky shore
TLDR
Overall, the relative importance of invertebrates as food increased in spring, which may be related to seasonal fluctuations of macro-algae and algae-associated faunas and the potential importance of large, highly mobile predators such as adult L. latus in the food web dynamics of shallow-water (including the intertidal) assemblages.
Seasonal and developmental diet shifts in sympatric and allopatric intertidal gobies determined by stomach content and stable isotope analysis.
TLDR
The results indicate that resource partitioning in the two sympatric species varied with season, with almost no trophic niche overlap in summer to a ~ 30% overlap in winter and evidence of dietary changes in B. cocosensis, which is likely associated with a shift in micro-habitat and intraspecific competition.

TLDR
There was a large seasonal variation, with the catches of most species peaking in winter and early spring, including the majority of those most important in the diet of otters: conger eels, shore rocklings, rock gobies and corkwing wrasse.
Variation and resilience of rocky intertidal fish in western Portugal
TLDR
The agonistic behaviour of tide pool fishes is strongly related to the priority of access to holes and crevices and this may place limits on the number of fishes of a given size that can exist in each pool as a function of topographic complexity.
Microhabitat segregation in three rocky intertidal fish species in Portugal: does it reflect interspecific competition?
TLDR
Recruits of Lipophrys pholis, Coryphoblennius galerita and Gobius cobitis spend the low tide under water in pools, and in the case of G. cobitis also in channels, and interspecific competition was unlikely to explain these results fully.
Use of rocky intertidal habitats by juvenile pollock Pollachius virens
