The pathway of phloem unloading and the metabolism of translocated sucrose were determined in corn (Zea mays) seedling roots. Several lines of evidence show that exogenous sucrose, unlike translocated sucrose, is hydrolyzed in the apoplast prior to uptake into the root cortical cells.
