Grasshoppers, Melanoplus sanguinipes (F.), infected with the grasshopper inclusion body virus (GIBV) showed a general torpor, took longer to develop, and had abnormally high rates of mortality. Infection was found only in the fat body, and developing viruses and inclusion bodies were observed in the nuclei and cytoplasm of infected cells.
