Widespread mammography and the increasing use of breast-conserving therapy make bilateral and multifocal breast cancer more important issues in patient care. The biologic mechanisms of these two cancer types differ. Bilateral breast cancer results from independent primaries in the two breasts, while multifocal breast cancer can result from either intramammary spread from a single index tumor or, probably less commonly, from multiple synchronous primary tumors.
