Recent studies have provided evidence for a functional impairment of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-containing interneurons in the prefrontal cortex of schizophrenics. This evidence includes reported deficits of basket and chandelier cells, which are known to contain the calcium-binding protein parvalbumin.
