Abstract It is shown that the thermodynamic equilibrium between Pt, Ir and a silicated melt of basaltic composition is obtained for a holding temperature of 1430°C and 24 hours. The reversibility of the reactions involved is also demonstrated. The existence of PGE dissolution in the melt, in the form of zerovalent metals, is confirmed.
