To obtain a representative sample of a nonhomogeneous solid material, analysts must render samples into a finely divided state. Various mechanical devices can perform this task. They range from simple mortars and pestles to complex, powerful, semiautomated machines that can handle samples as large as rocks. This month's column will look at popular particle-size reduction equipment and discuss their practical application
