Particle shape is a key to the space-filling and strength properties of granular matter. We consider a shape parameter $\eta$ describing the degree of distortion from a perfectly spherical shape. Encompassing most specific shape characteristics such as elongation, angularity and nonconvexity, $\eta$ is a low-order but generic parameter that we used in a numerical benchmark test for a systematic investigation of shape-dependence in sheared granular packings composed of particles of different…

Effects of particle shape mixture on strength and structure of sheared granular materials.
Using bi-dimensional discrete element simulations, the shear strength and microstructure of granular mixtures composed of particles of different shapes are systematically analyzed as a function of
Inertial shear flow of assemblies of frictionless polygons: Rheology and microstructure
Under growing I, the depletion of contact networks is considerably slower with pentagons, in which increasingly anisotropic, but still well-connected force-transmitting structures are maintained throughout the studied range.
Rheology and structure of polydisperse three-dimensional packings of spheres
We use three-dimensional contact dynamics simulations to analyze the rheology of polydisperse packings of spherical particles subjected to simple shear. The macroscopic and microstructural properties

In this article, I study the shear thickening of suspensions of frictional dimers by the mean of numerical simulations. I report the evolution of the main parameters of shear thickening, such as the
Jamming transition in non-spherical particle systems: pentagons versus disks
We investigate the jamming transition in a quasi-2D granular material composed of regular pentagons or disks subjected to quasistatic uniaxial compression. We report six major findings based on
Analysis of internal state and strains in granular material at meso-scale: influence of particle shape
Using Non Smooth Contact Dynamic formalism to conduct contact dynamics simulations, we investigate the internal state and deformation of two granular numerical materials composed of poly-sized
Effects of particle asphericity on the macro- and micro-mechanical behaviors of granular assemblies
Particle shape has been regarded as a key factor affecting mechanical behaviors of granular assemblies. The present work proposes a shape descriptor, i.e., asphericity, to isolate the effect of
Numerical study of one-dimensional compression of granular materials. I. Stress-strain behavior, microstructure, and irreversibility.
Elastic moduli may express the response to very small stress increments about the transversely isotropic well-equilibrated states along the loading path, although oedometric compression proves an essentially anelastic process, mainly due to friction mobilization, with large irreversible effects apparent upon unloading.
Manifestation of particle morphology on the mechanical behaviour of granular ensembles
This paper presents the effect of particle morphology (grain shape) on the mechanical response of granular materials. Two model systems with extreme differences in morphology were selected (spherical
Basic Mechanical Properties of Wet Granular Materials: A DEM Study
Numerical simulations, by the discrete element method (DEM), of a model granular assembly, made of spherical balls, are used to investigate the influence of a small amount of an interstitial wetting

Discrete numerical simulation, quasistatic deformation and the origins of strain in granular materials
Systematic numerical simulations of model dense granular materials in monotonous, quasistatic deformation reveal the existence of two different r\'egimes. In the first one, the macroscopic strains
A new model is developed by the author, which does not use the equations of motion but the equations of equilibrium to describe granular materials. The numerical results show great similarities with
