Structurally defined sulfated polysaccharides were produced by partial synthesis to develop new antithrombotics as potential heparin alternatives. Glucans of different natural origins were used as starting polymers. The resulting glucan sulfates display pronounced anticoagulant effects; some of them are as active as heparin.
