Parental investment, potential reproductive rates, and mating system in the strawberry dart-poison frog, Dendrobates pumilio

Abstract We studied the effect of relative parental investment on potential reproductive rates (PRRs) to explain sex differences in selectivity and competition in the dart-poison frog Dendrobates pumilio. We recorded the reproductive behavior of this species in a Costa Rican lowland rainforest for almost 6 months. Females spent more time on parental care than males, and `time out' estimates suggest that PRRs of males are much higher than than those of females, rendering females the limiting sex…

Population differences in female resource abundance, adult sex ratio, and male mating success in Dendrobates pumilio
- Environmental Science
- 2002
The results of this study suggest that ecological variables such as resource availability have a great impact on the mating system and sexual selection through their effect on population structure.
Clutch loss affects the operational sex ratio in the strawberry poison frog Dendrobates pumilio
- BiologyBehavioral Ecology and Sociobiology

This study resolves an apparent paradox, the negative correlation between mating frequency and reproductive success (=number of produced tadpoles) of individual males in one breeding season.
Territory size as a main driver of male-mating success in an Amazonian nurse frog (Allobates paleovarzensis, Dendrobatoidea)
- Biologyacta ethologica
- 2017
In polygamous mating systems, it is most often males that compete for the opposite sex, using strategies to provide access to as many females as possible. Females, on the other hand, constitute the…
Variation in Male Calling Behaviour and Relation to Male Mating Success in the Strawberry Poison Frog (Dendrobates pumilio)
- Biology
- 2003
The data of this study suggest that, in anurans, endurance rivalry contributes more to variation in male mating success than does female choice based on male characteristics.
Spatial distributions of male and female strawberry poison frogs and their relation to female reproductive resources
- Biology, Environmental ScienceOecologia
- 2014
It is concluded that males did not defend tadpole-rearing sites for females, consistent with the general assumption that female distribution is influenced by resource distribution and that male distribution depends on female distribution.
CALLING IS AN HONEST INDICATOR OF PATERNAL GENETIC QUALITY IN POISON FROGS
- BiologyEvolution; international journal of organic evolution
- 2006
The findings comply with the notion that female poison frogs prefer to mate with good callers because calling performance is a reliable predictor of offspring quality.
Opportunity for Sexual Selection and Effective Population Size in the Lek-Breeding European Treefrog (Hyla arborea).
- Biology, Environmental ScienceEvolution; international journal of organic evolution
- 2009
It is concluded that the lek-breeding system of treefrogs impacts only weakly the patterns of genetic diversity on sex-linked genes and the ability of natural populations to resist genetic drift.
REPRODUCTIVE ECOLOGY AND MATING SUCCESS OF MALE LIMNONECTES KUHLII, A FANGED FROG FROM TAIWAN
- Biology
- 2004
It is demonstrated that a large body size in male L. kuhlii seems to have evolved through intrasexual selection (male-male competition by physical combat) in the context of a resource-defense polygyny mating system.
Mating status correlates with dorsal brightness in some but not all poison frog populations
- BiologyEcology and evolution
- 2017
Overall the results imply that brightness differences among individuals of the same color morph may actually affect reproductive success in some populations of strawberry poison frogs.
EFFECTS OF SOCIAL AND EXTRA‐PAIR MATING ON SEXUAL SELECTION IN BLUE TITS (CYANISTES CAERULEUS)
- BiologyEvolution; international journal of organic evolution
- 2013
Under the assumption that the unknown sires are nonbreeding males, EPP reduced the variance in and the strength of selection on mating success, a possibility that hitherto has not been considered.

A technique for deducing the general direction of sexual competition which does not involve direct measurement of operational sex ratio is outlined, and it is stressed that it is important to use the population mean values for relative times out and not the maximum possible value for an individual.
