Interest in the etiology of malignancy-associated hypercalcemia (MAH) led to the discovery of a novel factor capable of reproducing many of the actions of parathyroid hormone (PTH) on bone and mineral metabolism. This factor was shown to circulate in suf®cient levels to be responsible for hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and increased bone resorption in the majority of MAH patients with solid tumors.
