Chromatographic separation of the leaves of Teclea trichocarpa (Engl.) Engl. (Rutaceae) used traditionally by Akamba tribe in Kenya yielded three acridone alkaloids, a furoquinoline alkaloid and two triterpenoids. The total extract (methanol) of the leaves of this plant and the isolated compounds were screened for in vitro for cytotoxicity and against parasitic protozoa, Plasmodium falciparum, Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania donovani. Among the compounds… Expand

Isolation and in vitro antiplasmodial activities of alkaloids from Teclea trichocarpa: in vivo antimalarial activity and X-ray crystal structure of normelicopicine.
Seven alkaloids have been isolated from Teclea trichocarpa including four, normelicopicine (1), arborinine (2), skimmianine (6), and dictamnine (7), that are reported for the first time in additionExpand
2-substituted quinoline alkaloids as potential antileishmanial drugs
TLDR
This study is the first to show the activity of 2-substituted quinoline alkaloids for experimental treatment of New World cutaneous leishmaniasis and further investigations of these compounds might yet prove helpful for the development of new antileishmanial drugs. Expand
The Alamar Blue assay to determine drug sensitivity of African trypanosomes (T.b. rhodesiense and T.b. gambiense) in vitro.
TLDR
The Alamar Blue assay can be applied for drug screening, since it is simple, reproducible and economical, and can also be used in field sites with less equipped laboratories, because in addition to fluorometric endpoint determination, a colorimetric reading is possible. Expand
4-aminoquinoline analogs of chloroquine with shortened side chains retain activity against chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum
TLDR
An assessment of the activities of four selected compounds containing ethyl, propyl, and isopropyl side chains that retain activity against chloroquine-resistant isolates of Plasmodium falciparum malaria and the formation of N-dealkylated metabolites of these compounds. Expand
New culture medium for maintenance of tsetse tissues and growth of trypanosomatids.
SYNOPSIS. A new culture medium (SM), based on the amino-acid composition of tsetse hemolymph and containing fetal bovine serum, was designed for the maintenance of tsetse organs and the cultivationExpand
Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria Parasite Cultures and Their Use in Immunology
TLDR
Plasmodium falciparum is still the only malaria parasite species that can be maintained in long-term culture and is the best characterized of the plasmodia from the biochemical and molecular biological points of view. Expand
Natural products and the development of selective antiprotozoal drugs
TLDR
The potential of natural plant products as a source of antiprotozoal drugs is discussed with respect to biochemical differences between protozoa and hosts with emphasis onalkaloids, terpenes, quinones and miscellaneous compounds. Expand

TLDR
Control of malaria may require more creative approaches than additional inhibitory drugs, which might include: the identification of biochemical pathways unique to the parasite (such as drug efflux and heme polymerase), making it possible to design new classes of antimalarial agents that are selectively toxic to the parasites. TLDR
Ways must be found to identify invariant surface epitopes that are so critical to parasite survival that in the face of a potentially lethal immune response mutant organisms cannot alter the target epitope and evade destruction. Expand
