Paraoxonase, an enzyme associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL-PON), exerts a protective effect against oxidative damage of circulating cells and lipoproteins, modulates the susceptibility of HDL to atherogenic modifications such as glycation and homocysteinylation, and even exerts an antiinflammatory role.
