Research in data flow architectures and languages, a major effort for the past 15 years, I has been motivated mainly by the desire for computational speeds that exceed those possible with current computer architectures. The computational speedup offered by the data flow approach is possible because all program instructions whose input values have been previously computed, can be executed simultaneously.
