Papuligobius, new genus, is distinguished by its particular combination of head canal system (additional terminal pores σ1 on anterior oculoscapular canal above anterior nostril) and longitudinal papillae pattern, with a single cp papilla. The type species is P. uniporus, new species, from the Nam Mat basin, north-eastern Laos. Tukagobius ocellatus Fowler, 1937, is placed in Papuligobius. The present study reveals that the adult male mouth size and forked sensory papillae row d can be considered as synapomorphies, and that the head pores on inter-orbital, anterior oculoscapular, and preopercular regions can be regarded as derived features among the Mugilogobius group.
