Paleogene deposits are extensively exposed in the Eastern Dahomey (Benin) sedimentary Basin in southwestern Nigeria. Outcrop logging and sampling of lithological sections were systematically carried out at the Ibese Quarry, in order to re-establish the age of sediments and reconstruct their depositional environment using samples rich in organic-walled microfossils. Two formations were recognized; the Ewekoro and Akinbo Formations. Two main lithological units were identified; limestones and…

Sedimentation, depositional environments, and hydrocarbon potential of the Maastrichtian-Paleocene Araromi Formation, eastern Dahomey (Benin) Basin, southwestern Nigeria

The Cretaceous sediments in southwestern Nigeria are host to one of the largest bitumen deposits in the world. In the current paper, an integrated study on sedimentology, palynology, and applied

Sequence stratigraphy of subsurface upper Eocene-lower Oligocene deposits, Dahomey Basin, Southwestern Nigeria: palynological and palynofacies approach

This paper presents a sequence-stratigraphic interpretation from the lithologic data and palynological and palynofacies analyses of four shallow boreholes (Badore-1, Epe-1, Ikoyi-1, and Olokonla-1)

Revisiting R.H. Tschudy’s fern-spore spike concept 40 years later: connecting Tschudy’s ‘disaster taxon’ concept with paleopolyploidization in Stenochlaena J. Sm

Abstract The Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary fern-spore spike concept was first introduced by R.H. Tschudy 40 years ago and established the precept that ferns are so-called ‘disaster taxa’ that

Climate and geological change as drivers of Mauritiinae palm biogeography

Forest composition and distribution are determined by a myriad of factors, including climate. As models of tropical rain forest, palms are often used as indicator taxa, particularly the Mauritiinae.
