Cluster analyses of echinoid distribution data for Paleogene stages in the Coastal Plains of eastern North America suggest provincial distributions for some stages. In only one case (New Jersey versus the Gulf Coast in the Sabinian) is this interpretable as climatically controlled endemism. The Suwannee Strait in southwestern Georgia and northwestern Florida may have acted as a barrier to echinoid dispersal between central Florida and the rest of the Gulf Coast during the Eocene.
