Abstract Compositions of Balsha lignite, Sofia coal-bearing basin, Bulgaria and carbonaceous shales are studied by petrological and geochemical proxies. The macropetrographic characteristic of profiles is relatively constant. The lignite is generally composed of dull matrix coal containing significant amounts of xylite fragments.
