We discuss monolayer and bilayer quantum Hall systems in which each layer is a half-filled Landau level (LL) system. In the mean field approximation of the Son's formalism there is a common pairing structure that underlines the possibilities for paired ground states in both systems. We argue that the particle-hole (PH) Pfaffian state in the (particle-hole symmetric) half-filled LL of a monolayer, and analogous state in the PH symmetric bilayer (in which each layer is half-filled LL) can be…

The Half-Full Landau Level

At even-denominator Landau level filling fractions, such as ν = 1/2, the ground state, in most cases, has no energy gap, and there is no quantized plateau in the Hall conductance. Nevertheless, the

Exciton condensation in quantum Hall bilayers at total filling νT=5

We study the coupled quantum Hall bilayers each at half-filled first excited Landau levels with varying the layer distance. Based on numerical exact diagonalization on torus, we identify two distinct

Paired states at 5/2: Particle-hole Pfaffian and particle-hole symmetry breaking

We study Cooper pairing in the Dirac composite fermion (CF) system. The presence of the mass term in the Dirac CF description (which may simulate Landau level mixing), i.e., breaking of particle-hole

Topological order from disorder and the quantized Hall thermal metal: Possible applications to the ν=5/2 state

Although numerical studies modeling the quantum hall effect at filling fraction $5/2$ predict either the Pfaffian (Pf) or its particle hole conjugate, the anti-Pfaffian (aPf) state, recent

Fractional quantum Hall effect at the filling factor $\nu=5/2$

The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect at the filling factor ν = 5 / 2 was discovered in GaAs heterostructures more than 35 years ago. Various topological orders have been proposed as possible

Disorder-Driven Transition in the ν=5/2 Fractional Quantum Hall Effect.

This work calculates the disorder averaged Hall conductance and the associated statistical distribution of the topological invariant Chern number, which unambiguously characterize the disorder-driven collapse of the FQH state.

Observation of half-integer thermal Hall conductance

Measurements of the thermal Hall conductance in the first excited Landau level of the quantum Hall effect show the existence of a state with non-Abelian excitations and perform topological unitary transformations when braided, which can be useful for topological quantum computation.

Model interactions for Pfaffian paired states based on Chern-Simons field theory description

On the basis of Chern-Simons field-theoretical description we propose a simple method for derivation of model interactions for Pfaffian paired states. We verify the method in the case of Pfaffian

Numerical exploration of trial wave functions for the particle-hole-symmetric Pfaffian

We numerically assess model wave functions for the recently proposed particle-hole-symmetric Pfaffian (“PH-Pfaffian”) topological order, a phase consistent with the recently reported thermal Hall
