Paediatric neurosurgery, old art and new science

May I first thank my predecessor, Dr David McLone, for his very kind introduction. It has been a very great honour and privilege for me to be your ISPN President. For the Society, it is a very special pleasure to visit this beautiful city, Melbourne, and for many of us to be in Australia for the first time. This has a very special historical significance, particularly for an Englishman, which I should like to illustrate briefly, with your permission, as an introduction to my talk.
