In this paper, we attempt to understand the cause of magnetostructural transformation in Mn-based antiperovskites by calculating EXAFS at the K edges of constituent metal atoms in three antiperovskite compounds, Mn$_3$GaC, Mn$_3$SnC and Mn$_3$InC. These three compounds have very different magnetic ground states despite the similar cubic structure. Our calculations show that the distortions of Mn$_6$C octahedra, which are responsible for the first-order magnetic transition to antiferromagnetic…

Effect of local structural distortions on magnetostructural transformation in Mn3SnC
• Materials Science
• 2015
In this paper we attempt to understand the different nature of first order magnetic transformation in Mn3SnC as compared to that in Mn3GaC. The transformation in Mn3SnC is close to room temperature (

The volume expanding magnetostructural transition in Mn 3 GaC and Mn 3 SnC has been identified to be due to distortion of Mn 6 C octahedra. Despite a similar lattice volume as Mn 3 SnC and similar
Local lattice distortion in the giant negative thermal expansion material Mn3Cu1-xGexN.

Evidence is presented for a local lattice distortion well described by the low-temperature tetragonal (T4) structure of Mn3GeN for a range of x, where the overall structure remains cubic.

Mn3GaC undergoes a ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic, volume discontinuous cubic-cubic phase transition as a function of temperature, pressure, and magnetic field. Through a series of temperature
Magnetostriction in Mn3CuN
• Materials Science

Discovery of large magnetostriction in an antiperovskite Mn3CuN is reported. Mn3CuN undergoes the first-order transition from high-temperature (high-T) paramagnetic to low-temperature ferromagnetic
