The Packed Ultra-wideband Mapping Array (PUMA) is a proposed low-resolution transit interferometric radio telescope operating over the frequency range 200 - 1100MHz. Its rich science portfolio will include measuring structure in the universe from redshift z = 0.3 to 6 using 21cm intensity mapping, detecting one million fast radio bursts, and monitoring thousands of pulsars. It will allow PUMA to advance science in three different areas of physics (the physics of dark energy, the physics of…
Inflation: Theory and Observations
Cosmic inflation provides a window to the highest energy densities accessible in nature, far beyond those achievable in any realistic terrestrial experiment. Theoretical insights into the
RF Electronics
TLDR
This whitepaper highlights some HEP applications where leading-edge RF microelectronics can be a key enabler, and describes how these devices are helping to accelerate the trend towards “software defined radio” in several high-volume commercial markets.
Snowmass2021 Cosmic Frontier White Paper: 21cm Radiation as a Probe of Physics Across Cosmic Ages
The 21 cm line refers to a forbidden transition in neutral hydrogen associated with alignment of spins of the proton and electron. It is a very low energy transition that is emitted whenever there is
Snowmass2021 Cosmic Frontier White Paper: Cosmology and Fundamental Physics from the three-dimensional Large Scale Structure
Advances in experimental techniques make it possible to map the high redshift Universe in three dimensions at high fidelity in the near future. This will increase the observed volume by many-fold,
Two Sides of the Same Coin: Sterile Neutrinos and Dark Radiation, Status and Perspectives
The presence of light sterile neutrinos is one of the unanswered questions of particle physics. The cosmological counterpart is represented by dark radiation, i.e., any form of radiation present in
Automated Detection of Antenna Malfunctions in Large-N Interferometers: A Case Study with the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array
TLDR
Two distinct categories of metrics designed to detect outliers along known failure modes of the array are outlined: cross-correlation metrics, based on all antenna pairs, and auto-correlations, based solely on individual antennas.

Cosmology at high redshift — a probe of fundamental physics
An observational program focused on the high redshift (2<z<6) Universe has the opportunity to dramatically improve over upcoming LSS and CMB surveys on measurements of both the standard cosmological
Mind the gap: the power of combining photometric surveys with intensity mapping
The long wavelength modes lost to bright foregrounds in the interferometric 21-cm surveys can partially be recovered using a forward modeling approach that exploits the non-linear coupling between
Multi-dimensional population modelling using frbpoppy: Magnetars can produce the observed fast radio burst sky
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are energetic, short, bright transients that occur frequently over the entire radio sky. The observational challenges following from their fleeting, generally one-off nature

Reconstructing large-scale structure with neutral hydrogen surveys
Upcoming 21-cm intensity surveys will use the hyperfine transition in emission to map out neutral hydrogen in large volumes of the universe. Unfortunately, large spatial scales are completely
Inflation and Early Dark Energy with a Stage II Hydrogen Intensity Mapping experiment
This white paper envisions a revolutionary post-DESI, post-LSST dark energy program based on intensity mapping of the redshifted 21cm emission line from neutral hydrogen at radio frequencies. The
Cosmology with Phase 1 of the Square Kilometre Array Red Book 2018: Technical specifications and performance forecasts
Abstract We present a detailed overview of the cosmological surveys that we aim to carry out with Phase 1 of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA1) and the science that they will enable. We highlight

Understanding the HERA Phase I receiver system with simulations and its impact on the detectability of the EoR delay power spectrum
The detection of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) delay power spectrum using a ‘foreground avoidance method’ highly depends on the instrument chromaticity. The systematic effects induced by the

The Canadian Hydrogen Observatory and Radio-transient Detector (CHORD) is a next-generation radio telescope, proposed for construction to start immediately. CHORD is a pan-Canadian project, designed
Mitigating Internal Instrument Coupling for 21 cm Cosmology. I. Temporal and Spectral Modeling in Simulations
We study the behavior of internal signal chain reflections and antenna cross coupling as systematics for 21 cm cosmological surveys. We outline the mathematics for how these systematics appear in
