This paper proposes a parallel relaxation machine, called a PaRM, for handwritten Japanese characters. The PaRM is Ž . composed of multiple relaxation units RUs that are implemented using FPGAs. From the results of performance evaluation, the PaRM can recognize 1000 characters per second with the accuracy of 99.4% and is 70 times faster than a 200 MHz PentiumPro processor. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
