A new, rapid and sensitive protocol is reported for diagno sis of sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) using small (2 cm/) samples of leaf tissue as starting material. The procedure in volves total RNA isolation followed by reverse transcription and amplification by the polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of a substantial portion (884bp) of the coat protein gene of SCMV. This can be followed by corroborative amplification of a smaller region (360bp) within the first amplified frag ment (nested PCR… Expand
A SURVEY OF SOUTH AFRICAN SUGARCANE MOSAIC VIRUS ( SCMV ) STRAINS BASED ON COAT PROTEIN GENE SEQUENCE ANALYSIS
N-terminus is the most significant region in the virus that is Sugarcane mosaic potyvirus (SCMV) infection can severely reduce sucrose yield in susceptible sugarcane varieties in South Africa.Expand
Virus Diseases of Sugarcane . A Constant Challenge to Sugarcane Breeding in Brazil
Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) and Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV) are the two main viruses infecting sugarcane in Brazil. The authors analyze the emergence and current status of these pathogensExpand
PROGRESS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MOSAIC RESISTANT SUGARCANE VIA TRANSGENESIS
The sugarcane disease mosaic causes severe economic losses in South Africa and other sugarcanegrowing areas worldwide. The causative agent is the sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV), which belongs to theExpand

An Overview of the Sugarcane Mosaic Disease in South America
Sugarcane mosaic, one of the most important viral diseases of sugarcane, is widely distributed in the world and its economic significance varies among regions. Economic losses depend on varietalExpand
Evaluation of Brazilian sugarcane genotypes for resistance to Sugarcane mosaic virus under greenhouse and field conditions
TLDR
Evaluating the resistance of 79 sugarcane genotypes artificially inoculated with a severe Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) strain and estimating genetic parameters associated with SCMV resistance revealed varying behavior, including recovery from disease in some genotypes. Expand
GENE DISCOVERY: APPROACHES, DEVELOPMENTS AND APPLICATIONS TO SUGARCANE IMPROVEMENT
TLDR
An overview of gene discovery strategies employed at SASRI and the impact that they have had on sugarcane improvement research is presented and the manner in which recent technological and bioinformatical advances are being embraced within this area of research is described. Expand
