Recent observations of 850 m sub-mm polarization from T-Tauri disks open up the possibility of studying the magnetic eld structure within protostellar disks. The degree of polarization is around 3% and the direction of polarization is perpendicular to the disk. Since thermal emission from dust grains dominates the spectral energy distribution at sub-mm/far-infrared (FIR) wavelengths, dust grains are thought to be the cause of the polarization. We discuss grain alignment by radiation and we… Expand

Intrinsic polarization of elongated porous dust grains
Observations of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) revealed recently polarized radiation of several protoplanetary discs in the (sub)millimetre wavelength range. Besides self-scattering ofExpand
Polarization and Polarimetry: A Review
Polarization is a basic property of light and is fundamentally linked to the internal geometry of a source of radiation. Polarimetry complements photometric, spectroscopic, and imaging analyses ofExpand
Self-scattering of non-spherical dust grains
The understanding of (sub-)millimetre polarisation has made a leap forward since high-resolution imaging with ALMA came available. Amongst other effects, self-scattering (i.e., scattering of thermalExpand

GRAIN ALIGNMENT AND POLARIZED EMISSION FROM MAGNETIZED T TAURI DISKS
The structure of magnetic fields within protostellar disks may be studied via polarimetry provided that grains are aligned with respect to the magnetic field within the disks. We explore theExpand
Spectral Energy Distributions of Passive T Tauri Disks: Inclination
We compute spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for passive T Tauri disks viewed at arbitrary inclinations. Semianalytic models of disks in radiative and hydrostatic equilibrium are employed. OverExpand
Magnetic field surrounding the starburst nucleus of the galaxy M82 from polarized dust emission
TLDR
Observations of polarized thermal emission from the aligned dust grains in the central region of M82, which directly traces the magnetic field structure (as projected onto the plane of the sky) are reported. Expand
Spectral Energy Distributions of T Tauri Stars with Passive Circumstellar Disks
We derive hydrostatic, radiative equilibrium models for passive disks surrounding T Tauri stars. Each disk is encased by an optically thin layer of superheated dust grains. This layer reemitsExpand
Tracing Magnetic Fields with Aligned Grains
Magnetic fields play a crucial role in various astrophysical processes, including star formation, accretion of matter, transport processes (e.g., transport of heat), and cosmic rays. One of theExpand
Spectroscopic constraints on the properties of dust in active galactic nuclei
The optical properties of graphite, silicate, and SiC grains over the wavelength range 1000 microns - 1 A are calculated for grains in the 0.005-10-micron size range. Both graphite + silicate (MRN)Expand
Radiative Torques on Interstellar Grains. II. Grain Alignment
Radiative torques on irregular dust grains, in addition to producing superthermal rotation, play a direct dynamical role in the alignment of interstellar dust with the local magnetic field. TheExpand
Grain Alignment by Radiation in Dark Clouds and Cores
We study alignment of grains by radiative torques. We found a steep rise in radiative torque efficiency as grain size increases. This allows the larger grains that are known to exist within molecularExpand
Orientation of cosmic dust grains
Orientation of nonspherical cosmic dust grains is found in anisotropic corpuscular or radiative fluxes and in the presence of the magnetic field; cosmic grains being approximated by axially symmetricExpand
Radiative torque alignment: essential physical processes
We study the physical processes that affect the alignment of grains subject to radiative torques (RATs). To describe the action of RATs, we use the analytical model (AMO) of RATs introduced in ourExpand
