It has long been recognized that quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray light curves of accreting black hole and neutron star binaries have the potential to be powerful diagnostics of strong field gravity. However, this potential cannot be fulfilled without a working theoretical model, which has remained elusive. Perhaps, the most promising model associates the QPO with Lense–Thirring precession of the inner accretion flow, with the changes in viewing angle and Doppler boosting…

X-Ray Quasi-periodic Oscillations in the Lense–Thirring Precession Model. I. Variability of Relativistic Continuum

We develop a Monte Carlo code to compute the Compton-scattered X-ray flux arising from a hot inner flow that undergoes Lense–Thirring precession. The hot flow intercepts seed photons from an outer

X-Ray Quasi-periodic Oscillations in the Lense–Thirring Precession Model. II. Variability of the Relativistic Iron Kα Line

The reprocessing of primary X-ray emission in the accretion disk of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) produces a reflection spectrum with the characteristic Fe Kα fluorescence line. Strong

Tomographic reflection modelling of quasi-periodic oscillations in the black hole binary H 1743-322

Accreting stellar mass black holes (BHs) routinely exhibit Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). These are often interpreted as Lense–Thirring precession of the inner accretion flow, a

A quasi-periodic modulation of the iron line centroid energy in the black hole binary H1743−322

Accreting stellar-mass black holes often show a ‘Type-C’ quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in their X-ray flux and an iron emission line in their X-ray spectrum. The iron line is generated through

An observational method for fast stochastic X-ray polarimetry timing

The upcoming launch of the first space based X-ray polarimeter in ∼40 yr will provide powerful new diagnostic information to study accreting compact objects. In particular, analysis of rapid

A public relativistic transfer function model for X-ray reverberation mapping of accreting black holes

We present the publicly available model reltrans that calculates the light-crossing delays and energy shifts experienced by X-ray photons originally emitted close to the black hole when they reflect

Formation of precessing jets by tilted black hole discs in 3D general relativistic MHD simulations

Gas falling into a black hole (BH) from large distances is unaware of BH spin direction, and misalignment between the accretion disc and BH spin is expected to be common. However, the physics of

STUDIES OF THE ORIGIN OF HIGH-FREQUENCY QUASI-PERIODIC OSCILLATIONS OF MASS-ACCRETING BLACK HOLES IN X-RAY BINARIES WITH NEXT-GENERATION X-RAY TELESCOPES

Observations with RXTE (Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer) revealed the presence of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) of the X-ray flux from several accreting stellar-mass black holes.

Multi-time-scale X-ray reverberation mapping of accreting black holes

Accreting black holes show characteristic reflection features in their X-ray spectrum, including an iron Kα line, resulting from hard X-ray continuum photons illuminating the accretion disc. The

A UNIFIED LENSE–THIRRING PRECESSION MODEL FOR OPTICAL AND X-RAY QUASI-PERIODIC OSCILLATIONS IN BLACK HOLE BINARIES

Recent observations of accreting black holes reveal the presence of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) in the optical power density spectra. The corresponding oscillation periods match those found in

Lense-Thirring Precession and Quasi-periodic Oscillations in Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries

Relativistic dragging of inertial frames around fast-rotating collapsed stars is substantial and can give rise to observable effects. We consider kHz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) sources,

X-RAY POLARIZATION FROM ACCRETING BLACK HOLES: THE THERMAL STATE

We present new calculations of X-ray polarization from black hole (BH) accretion disks in the thermally dominated state, using a Monte Carlo ray-tracing code in full general relativity. In contrast

The effect of frame dragging on the iron Kα line in X-ray binaries

The clear characteristic time-scale picked out by the low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) seen in many black hole and neutron star binaries has the potential to provide a very powerful

Thermal disc emission from a rotating black hole: X-ray polarization signatures

Thermal emission from the accretion disc around a black hole can be polarized, due to Thomson scattering in a disc atmosphere. In Newtonian space, the polarization angle must be either parallel or

Light curves and polarization of accretion- and nuclear-powered millisecond pulsars

We study theoretical X-ray light curves and polarization properties of accretion-powered millisecond pulsars. We assume that the radiation is produced in two antipodal spots at the neutron star

Near-infrared polarimetry as a tool for testing properties of accreting supermassive black holes

Several massive black holes exhibit flux variability on time-scales that correspond to source sizes of the order of few Schwarzschild radii. We survey the potential of near-infrared and X-ray

Light Curves from an MHD Simulation of a Black Hole Accretion Disk

We use a relativistic ray-tracing code to calculate the light curves observed from a global, general relativistic, magnetohydrodynamic simulation of an accretion flow onto a Schwarzschild black hole.

TESTS OF GENERAL RELATIVITY IN THE STRONG-GRAVITY REGIME BASED ON X-RAY SPECTROPOLARIMETRIC OBSERVATIONS OF BLACK HOLES IN X-RAY BINARIES

Although general relativity (GR) has been tested extensively in the weak-gravity regime, similar tests in the strong-gravity regime are still missing. In this paper, we explore the possibility to use

Variation in the primary and reprocessed radiation from an orbiting spot around a black hole

We study light curves and spectra (equivalent widths of the iron line and some other spectral characteristics) which arise by reflection on the surface of an accretion disc, following its
