Equipped with a stellar editorial board and a wad of cash, the high-profile cast of the Public Library of Science (PLoS) seemed well on its way to launching two successful new free journals when it announced the venture in December 2002. Now the organization has scored another coup, nabbing Vivian Siegel, former editor-in-chief of the journal Cell, to head its operations.
