This paper presents an analysis of soil deformation beneath a grouser wheel based on particle image velocimetry (PIV). So far, wheeled mechanism has been mainly adopted in locomotion gears of exploration rovers on lunar and planetary surfaces because of its reliability and efficiency. Such surfaces are generally covered with fine soil such as lunar or Martian regolith.
