Eukaryotic cells possess a quality control process, 'nonsense-mediated mRNA decay' (NMD) for removing aberrant mRNAs that contain nonsense mutations in their protein coding regions [1,2]. A second RNA surveillance mechanism is RNA interference (RNAi), which is thought to be an ancient pathway for the removal of foreign, in particular viral, mRNA [3,4].
