To the Editor:— The Council on Drugs has issued a warning concerning hypertensive reactions from the monoamine oxidase inhibitor tranylcypromine (Parnate) sulfate, especially after ingestion of cheese ( JAMA 186 :854 [Nov 30] 1963). The pressor-like substance, tyramine hydrochloride, has been incriminated. There is failure of usual tyramine degradation by monoamine oxidase due to inhibition of this enzyme system by the drug.
