  • ▪ Abstract A review of crocodylian phylogeny reveals a more complex history than might have been anticipated from a direct reading of the fossil record without consideration of phylogenetic relationships. The three main extant crocodylian lineages—Gavialoidea, Alligatoroidea, Crocodyloidea—are known from fossils in the Late Cretaceous, and the group is found nearly worldwide during the Cenozoic.
