Thorium and the rare earths are titrated with (ethylenedinitrilo)tetraacetic acid using Alizarin Red S is indicator. Photometric end point detection increases the sensitivity of the method. Determinations can be made at concentrations as low as 5.10-6M. In the case of the cerium group rare earths, the method allows simultaneous determination of both thorium and the rare earths.
