Purpose The purpose of this article is to investigate possible differences in effect between three types of masks in the acute treatment of cluster headache (CH. [] Key Method Results Only 10 CH patients had multiple attacks and reached the point of placebo. There were no significant differences between masks in the primary endpoints (p = 0.412). After 15 minutes 48% had a two-point decrease using the DVO compared to 45% with placebo (p = 0.867). After 30 minutes 68% were pain free or had pain relief using…

Oxygen treatment for cluster headache attacks at different flow rates: a double-blind, randomized, crossover study
TLDR
There is lack of evidence to support differences in the effect of oxygen at a flow rate of 12 L/min compared to 7  L/min, but it might be more cost-effective, however, to start with 7 l/min and, if ineffective, to switch to 12 lus/min.
Oxygen Therapy in Cluster Headache, Migraine, and Other Headache Disorders
TLDR
There are some reports on the efficacy of OT as an adjuvant therapy in hypnic headache, primary headache in the emergency department, and even postdural puncture headache, so knowledge regarding the use of oxygen in the treatment of headache disorders is expanded.
Real-life treatment of cluster headache in a tertiary headache center – results from the Danish Cluster Headache Survey
TLDR
Episodic cluster headache is more responsive to acute therapy than chronic and sumatriptan injection was more effective than oxygen and the responder-rate was limited with verapamil.
Drug Treatment of Cluster Headache
TLDR
This review summarizes drug therapy of cluster attacks and prophylactic treatment and the efficacy of monoclonal antibodies to the calcitonin gene-related peptide so far has been only demonstrated for episodic cluster headache.
The role of oxygen in cluster headache
TLDR
High-flow oxygen inhalation via a non-rebreather mask during cluster headache attacks has been widely recommended and some evidence has demonstrated its relationship to the trigeminovascular system and neuroinflammation.
Update on Treatment of Cluster Headache
TLDR
Galcanezumab, the only anti-CGRP receptor monoclonal antibody with proven efficacy for the preventive treatment of episodic CH, represents an important advance for pharmacological treatment of CH.
Pharmacotherapy for Cluster Headache
TLDR
A new addition to the preventive treatment options in episodic cluster headache is galcanezumab, although the long-term effects remain unknown.
Emerging treatments for cluster headache: hopes and disappointments
  • D. Magis
  • Medicine
    Current opinion in neurology
  • 2019
TLDR
These novel approaches provide additional alternatives to conventional cluster headache management, but results obtained in chronic forms are often disappointing.
Evolving options for the treatment of cluster headache.
TLDR
Calcitonin gene-related peptide pathway blockade with monoclonal antibodies, specifically the CGRP MAB galcanezumab, represents an important advance for episodic cluster headache, reducing the number of attacks during a bout.

This double-blind crossover study documents that patients with cluster headache can benefit from oxygen inhalation during acute attacks.
Placebo Response in Cluster Headache Trials: A Review
TLDR
It is concluded that a placebo response exists in trials of drugs on cluster headache patients, and this placebo response is of the same magnitude as that seen in migraine studies.
Triptans for acute cluster headache.
TLDR
Zolmitriptan and sumatriptan are effective in the acute treatment of cluster headaches and may provide a useful treatment option, potentially offering convenience over oxygen therapy and a better safety and tolerability profile than ergotamine.
Subcutaneous sumatriptan in the acute treatment of cluster headache: a dose comparison study
TLDR
The 12 mg dose was not significantly better than the 6 mg dose and was associated with more adverse events, and the 6mg dose is therefore recommended for the acute treatment of cluster headache.

TLDR
Sumatriptan is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for acute attacks of cluster headache and was well tolerated in patients with cluster headache.
The history of oxygen inhalation as a treatment for cluster headache
TLDR
A historical perspective of oxygen treatment in cluster headache suggests that these authors originally adhered to the vasoconstrictive theory of vascular headache that was prevalent in the early 20th century until Wolff demonstrated the contrary in the late 1930s.
High oxygen flow rates for cluster headache
TLDR
The two most effective cluster abortive agents are injectable sumatriptan and inhaled oxygen and the rationale behind this prescribed oxygen flow rate is unknown but has become doctrine since the Kudrow study.

TLDR
Demand valve oxygen appears to be an effective acute treatment for cluster headache and to compare this oxygen delivery technique with standard cluster headache therapy of continuous flow oxygen.
Cluster headache: A prospective clinical study with diagnostic implications
TLDR
Patients with cluster headache offer a population of primary headache patients with devastating acute attacks of pain and the syndrome is stereotyped with effective evidence-based treatments that are prescribed in only half of patients having cluster headache.
