Protoberberinium salts, i.e. berberine (I), palmatine (II) and jatrorrhizine (III) prepared from Mahonia aquifolium (Pursh) Nutt. belong to isoquinoline alkaloids possessing interesting biological activity (e.g. antibacterial, antimalarial, antitumor).
