BACKGROUND
Oxidative stress appears to have a central role in the pathophysiological process of uremia and its complications, including cardiovascular disease. However, there is little evidence to suggest how early oxidative stress starts developing during the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aim of this study is to assess oxidative stress activity in a cross-sectional study of patients with CKD stages 1 to 4.

Eighty-seven steady patients (47 men, 40 women) with a…

Increase in Oxidative Stress but Not in Antioxidant Capacity with Advancing Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease
- Medicine, BiologyAmerican Journal of Nephrology
- 2007
This study shows that 15-F2t-IsoP levels increase progressively with advancing CKD stages, whereas TAC and vitamin E levels remain rather stable with the loss of renal function and change only in patients with ESRD.
The progress of inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with chronic kidney disease
- MedicineRenal failure
- 2015
Serum levels of hs-CRP, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and MDA were significantly increased, and the serum levels of SOD and GSH-PX were significantly decreased in these participants, and inflammation and oxidative stress interacted with each other and played pivotal roles in the development of CKD.

There is an important oxidative stress in patients with advanced renal disease, probably established during early stages of disease, and the nuclear 8-oxo-dG is the best marker for oxidative Stress in CRD.

It is found that CRP and MDA values increase as disease progresses while there is decrease in the levels of SOD and GPx and TAC values in patients do not vary much from that of controls.

A pilot study indicates that Glutaredoxin1 (Grx) may be a useful marker for assessing the degree of oxidative stress in CKD, however this needs further investigation in a larger prospective patient cohort.

The hypothesis that increased oxidative stress and its sequalae is a major contributor to increased atherosclerosis and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality found in uremia is proposed and it is proposed that retained uremic solutes such as beta-2 microglobulin, advanced glycosylated end products, cysteine, and homocysteine further contribute to the pro-atherogenic milieu of Uremia.
