Overlooked diversity in African Solanum (Solanaceae): new and endangered Solanum agnewiorum from Kenya

title={Overlooked diversity in African Solanum (Solanaceae): new and endangered Solanum agnewiorum from Kenya},
author={Maria S. Vorontsova and Paul Muigai Kirika and Patrick Muthoka},
Despite the almost universal occurrence of Solanum in Kenya, there continues to be a significant gap in floristic knowledge of this important genus. We describe Solanum agnewiorum from montane forest in the central highlands. We assess the IUCN conservation status of this species as Endangered.

A new species of Solanum (Solanaceae) from South Africa related to the cultivated eggplant
A new andromonoecious species related to the eggplant and belonging to Solanum subgenus Leptostemonum from southern Africa is described, found in the eastern part of South Africa, and is sympatric with its close relativeSolanum linnaeanum Hepper & P.Jaeger.
A new species of Solanum named for Jeanne Baret, an overlooked contributor to the history of botany
A new species of Solanum section Anarrhichomenum is named in honor of Jeanne Baret, who sailed as the assistant to botanist Philibert Commerson on Louis Antoine de Bougainville's global circumnavigation (1766–1769).
Eggplants and Relatives: From Exploring Their Diversity and Phylogenetic Relationships to Conservation Challenges
A historical survey of the last taxonomic treatments and phylogenetic analyses for genus Solanum is provided, hoping that this will familiarise the reader with this wide topic and will ease up his/her orientation through the specialised and extensive literature.
Crop wild relatives of the brinjal eggplant (Solanum melongena): Poorly represented in genebanks and many species at risk of extinction.
It is shown that many eggplant CWR are poorly represented in genebanks compared to their native ranges and the importance of assessing threats to wild species when targeting localities for future collection of CWR to improve crop breeding in the face of environmental change.
Review of East African Plant Collectors
The East African Plant Collectors is the perfect supplement to this great flora and is a wonderful compendium of botanists, collectors and authors showing the human element of the flora - the people behind the herbarium specimens, the new species and combinations and the flora treatments.
Geographic analysis for supporting conservation strategies of crop wild relatives
The work presented in this thesis is a contribution to the effort of understanding the ex situ conservation gaps of crop wild relatives, their expected response to climate change and their needs for conservation.

Three New Species of Solanum from Kenya: Using Herbarium Specimens to Document Environmental Change
Three new species of spiny Solanum are identified from the Acacia-Commiphora savanna, solanum phoxocarpum from the Kenyan highlands, andSolanum malindiense from the coastal vegetation.
Systematic studies in the genus Solanum in Africa
The systematic history of the African species of Solanum is reviewed to provide an insight into the origins of the nomenclatural problems that pervade the genus.
A Three-Gene Phylogeny of the Genus Solanum (Solanaceae)
The data suggest that most traditionally recognized Solanum subgenera are not monophyletic, and provides a framework for directed sampling in further phylogenetic studies, and identifies natural groups for focused revisionary work.
Assessing patterns of plant endemism in neotropical uplands
This article examines patterns of species richness and range-size rarity, or endemism, in the Neotropics with a data set from the genusSolanum (Solanaceae), and problems with quantitative data sets in conservation are discussed.
History and Concepts of Big Plant Genera
It is argued that comparisons of size, phenomena, and processes will only be possible by comprehensive study of the lineages comprising these genera and their immediate historical relatives; uncritical lists or relatively limited samples are not enough.
