Outstanding Biologist of 20th Century (on the 75th Anniversary of the Birth of Academician V.E. Sokolov)

Abstract

Among the bright constellation of Soviet and Russian biologists of the 20th century, one can mention Academician Vladimir Evgen’evich Sokolov, a leading scientist in zoology and ecology, as a superstar. Academician D.S. Pavlov wrote about his teacher, “In the history of our science, life and activity of Vladimir Evgen’evich Sokolov—an outstanding scientist in biology, zoology, and ecology, prominent organizer of scientific activity, and international figure in wildlife conservation—have left a bright and memorable mark. Sokolov was the head of Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution (USSR and Russian Academies of Sciences) for over 30 years, managed the Department of Vertebrate Zoology and General Ecology (Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University) for 16 years, and headed the Division of General Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences for 13 years.”
