The ideal timing of tracheostomy varies. This study sought to determine demographic, management, and outcome differences in patients undergoing early tracheostomy (ET) versus late tracheostomy (LT) (<10 days vs. >10 days postintubation, respectively).
Clinical and Economic Impact of Time From Admission for CSF Rhinorrhea to Surgical Repair
TLDR
If conservative management of CSF leak is unsuccessful, surgical repair is indicated for the prevention of severe complications such as meningitis and the influence of surgical timing on clinical and economic outcomes is investigated.
Hospital Variation in Early Tracheostomy in the United States: A Population-Based Study*
TLDR
Early tracheostomy is potentially overused among mechanically ventilated trauma patients, with nearly half of trachostomies performed within the first week of mechanical ventilation and large unexplained hospital variation, without clear benefits.
Outcomes of Tracheostomy With Concomitant and Delayed Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy in the Neuroscience Critical Care Unit
TLDR
The practice of tracheostomy with concomitant PEG placement may be considered as feasible as delayed PEG in carefully selected neurocritically ill patients with possible advantages of overall shorter NCCU and hospital LOS, higher predischarge prealbumin, and lower hospital costs.
Utilization of tracheostomy among geriatric trauma patients and association with mortality
TLDR
Amongst the elderly patients, performance of tracheostomy was associated with a significantly higher overall survival, and delaying or avoiding this procedure in the elderly trauma patient predominantly based on age might not be justified.
Timing of tracheostomy in patients with prolonged endotracheal intubation: a systematic review
TLDR
In conclusion, early tracheostomy within 7 days of intubation should be done for both adults and pediatric patients with prolongedintubation.
Healthcare costs and outcomes for patients undergoing tracheostomy in an Australian tertiary level referral hospital
TLDR
There were no statistically significant differences in any of the measured outcomes, including costs, between patients who underwent percutaneous versus surgical tracheostomy and Patients who underwent early versus late tracheOSTomy in their intensive care unit stay.
Transsphenoidal surgery and diabetes mellitus: An analysis of inpatient data and complications
TLDR
DM's association with postoperative TSS complications is characterized and comparison of complication rates between DM and non‐DM patients who have undergone TSS in recent years is performed.
Development of Clinical Tracheostomy Score to Identify Cervical Spinal Cord Injury Patients Requiring Prolonged Ventilator Support.
TLDR
Use of the Trach Score identified the majority of patients requiring prolonged ventilator support in patients with cervical spine fractures and CSCI from 2005 to 2017 and an early tracheostomy protocol using predictive modeling could aid in reduction of ICU length of stay and improving ventilATOR weaning in these patients.
Transsphenoidal surgery for malignant pituitary lesions: an analysis of inpatient complications
TLDR
This study evaluates inpatient complications, demographics, and hospitalization characteristics of patients who underwent transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) for malignant pituitary lesions.

Bedside Tracheostomy in the Intensive Care Unit: A Prospective Randomized Trial Comparing Open Surgical Tracheostomy With Endoscopically Guided Percutaneous Dilational Tracheotomy
Objectives Objectives of the study were 1) to analyze the complication incidence and resource utilization of two methods of bedside tracheostomy and 2) to define selection criteria for bedside
A multi‐institutional analysis of tracheotomy complications
TLDR
To define the prevalence of tracheotomy tube complications and evaluate risk factors (RFs) associated with their occurrence, a database of more than 1,000 patients with tracheotomies from around the world was constructed.
Tracheotomy Timing and Outcomes in the Critically Ill
TLDR
Early tracheotomy in ICU patients is associated with earlier ICU discharge, shorter duration of mechanical ventilation, and decreased length of overall hospital stay without affecting mortality.
Impact of early vs. late tracheostomy on weaning: a retrospective analysis.
TLDR
The length of weaning after tracheostomy is not affected by the timing, and it seems beneficial to favour early trachostomy in order to reduce the time of mechanical ventilation and its associated risks.
Early vs. late tracheostomy for the ICU patients: Experience in a referral hospital
TLDR
Proper assessment and early tracheostomy is recommended for patients who require prolonged tracheal intubation in the ICU and the risks associated with delayed trachostomy are stressed.
Bench-to-bedside review: Early tracheostomy in critically ill trauma patients
TLDR
The potential advantages of trachostomy versus endotracheal intubation, the different indications for tracheostomy in trauma patients and studies examining early versus late tracheOSTomy are summarized.
Effect of early vs late tracheostomy placement on survival in patients receiving mechanical ventilation: the TracMan randomized trial.
TLDR
For patients breathing with the aid of mechanical ventilation treated in adult critical care units in the United Kingdom, tracheostomy within 4 days of critical care admission was not associated with an improvement in 30-day mortality or other important secondary outcomes.
Postintubation tracheal stenosis.
Timing of tracheostomy.
TLDR
Recommendations are made that on day 2 or 3 after onset of mechanical ventilation or need for an artificial airway) tracheostomy should be seriously considered, and if no relevant contraindication is present and if the need for invasive mechanical ventilation can be expected to last for more than one week, tracheosynthesis should be planned and performed within the next 2 days.
Effect of Tracheostomy Timing on Clinical Outcome in Neurosurgical Patients: Early Versus Late Tracheostomy
TLDR
Early trachostomy reduced the MV duration, ICU LOS, and incidence of VAP in critically ill neurosurgical patients, however, early tracheostomy did not reduce either the ICU or hospital mortality.
