Open surgical decompression of the tarsal tunnel is the standard surgical approach for compression of the tibial nerve within the tarsal tunnel. Complications associated with this approach can be significant and periods of non–weight bearing are required. An alternative approach allowing for minimal soft tissue trauma and reduced time to ambulation is therefore desirable. Endoscopic tarsal tunnel decompression may provide such an alternative. The authors performed a systematic review of…
Tarsal Tunnel Surgery
TLDR
The authors present an algorithm outlining possible causes of failure based on the amount of relief achieved immediately after decompression and treatment options for each cause of failure.
Results of ultrasound-guided release of tarsal tunnel syndrome: a review of 81 cases with a minimum follow-up of 18 months
TLDR
Although 9% of patients did not improve, ultrasound-guided tarsal tunnel release might be a viable alternative to conventional open approaches.
Tarsal tunnel syndrome: still more opinions than evidence. Status of the art
TLDR
The published literature on Tarsal tunnel syndrome is reviewed to provide the reader some understanding of the status of the art and uncertainty still exist about the best conservative treatment, timing of surgical intervention, and best surgical approach.
Tarsal tunnel syndrome: Anatomical facts and clinical implications
TLDR
This literature review showed anatomical variations of the PTN and its branches that used the malleolar-calcaneal axis for measurement of branching point and the origin and the number of branches.
An MRI study of the tibial nerve in the ankle canal and its branches: a method of multiplanar reformation with 3D-FIESTA-C sequences
TLDR
3D-FIESTA-C MPR can display the morphological features and positions of the tibial nerve and its branches and the bifurcation point’s projection position can be marked on the body surface and provided a good imaging basis to plan a clinical operation of the ankle canal and avoid surgical injury.
Posterior Compartment of the Ankle Joint: A Focus on Arthroscopic Treatment (ICL 17)
TLDR
The anatomical research of Pau Golano has been of paramount importance for the development of a “safe”, reliable and reproducible approach to arthroscopic approach of the posterior ankle compartment.

TLDR
In the tarsal tunnel syndrome, the posterior tibial nerve is entrapped beneath the flexor retinaculum and deep fascia along the medial border of the foot, and results have been observed after surgical decompression.

The authors have used instrumentation developed by Smith & Nephew Dyonics, Inc., designed for endoscopic carpal tunnel release (ECTRA) in the endoscopic treatment of tarsal tunnel syndrome and appear advantageous over the open surgical technique.
