We present Hubble Space Telescope observations of a photometric outburst and splitting event in interstellar comet 2I/Borisov. The outburst, first reported with the comet outbound at 2.8 AU (Drahus et al.~2020), was caused by the expulsion of solid particles having a combined cross-section about 100 sq. km and a mass in 0.1 mm sized particles about 2e7 kg. The latter corresponds to 1e-4 of the mass of the nucleus, taken as a sphere of radius 500 m. A transient ``double nucleus'' was observed on…

Change in the brightness of interstellar comet 2I/Borisov
Abstract The paper presents an analysis of the actual change in brightness of comet 2I/Borisov. The calculations take into account total scattering cross-sections coming from ice, dust particles, and
Exobodies in Our Back Yard: Science from Missions to Nearby Interstellar Objects
The recent discovery of the first confirmed Interstellar Objects (ISOs) passing through the Solar System on clearly hyperbolic objects opens the potential for near term ISO missions, either to the
Constraining the orientation of the spin axes of extrasolar minor bodies 1I/2017 U1 (‘Oumuamua) and 2I/Borisov
Context. The orientation of the spin axis of a comet is defined by the values of its equatorial obliquity and its cometocentric longitude of the Sun. These parameters can be computed from the
Cometary Activity Begins at Kuiper Belt Distances: Evidence from C/2017 K2
We study the development of activity in the incoming long-period comet C/2017 K2 over the heliocentric distance range 9 ≲ r H ≲ 16 au. The comet continues to be characterized by a coma of
Disintegration of Long-period Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS). I. Hubble Space Telescope Observations
The near-Sun comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) is the first member of a long-period comet group observed to disintegrate well before perihelion. Here we present our investigation into this disintegration event
Dust Production of Interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov Throughout Perihelion
The recently discovered comet 2I/Borisov quickly became a prime target for comet observers during its perihelion approach in 2019 December, after it was discovered to be the first comet of
Sending a spacecraft to interstellar comet 2I/Borisov
On 2019 August 30, a second interstellar object 2I/Borisov was discovered 2 years after the discovery of the first known interstellar object, 1I/’Oumuamua. Can we send a spacecraft to this object,
Six Outbursts of Comet 46P/Wirtanen
Cometary activity is a manifestation of sublimation-driven processes at the surface of nuclei. However, cometary outbursts may arise from other processes that are not necessarily driven by volatiles.
Constraints on the spin-pole orientation, jet morphology, and rotation of interstellar comet 2I/Borisov with deep HST imaging
We present high resolution, deep imaging of interstellar comet 2I/Borisov taken with the Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 (HST/WFC3) on 2019 December 8 UTC and 2020 January 27 UTC (HST GO
Outbursting Quasi-Hilda Asteroid P/2010 H2 (Vales)
Quasi-Hilda asteroid P/2010 H2 (Vales) underwent a spectacular photometric outburst by 7.5 magnitudes (factor of 1000) in 2010. Here, we present our optical observations of this event in the four

The Nucleus of Interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov
We present high resolution imaging observations of interstellar comet 2I/Borisov (formerly C/2019 Q4) obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope. Scattering from the comet is dominated by a coma of
Initial characterization of interstellar comet 2I/Borisov
Interstellar comets penetrating through the Solar System had been anticipated for decades 1 , 2 . The discovery of asteroidal-looking ‘Oumuamua 3 , 4 was thus a huge surprise and a puzzle.
Interstellar comet 2I/Borisov exhibits a structure similar to native Solar system comets
We processed images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to investigate any morphological features in the inner coma suggestive of a peculiar activity on the nucleus of the interstellar comet
Coma Anisotropy and the Rotation Pole of Interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov
Hubble Space Telescope observations of interstellar comet 2I/Borisov near perihelion show the ejection of large (>~100 um) particles at <~9 m/s speeds, with estimated mass-loss rates of ~35 kg/s. The
Outburst of Comet 17P/Holmes Observed With The Solar Mass Ejection Imager
