Otosclerosis is a frequent condition which occurs exclusively in the human temporal bone. This peculiar disease affects mainly Caucasians and Indians and may cause conductive, mixed conductive-sensorineural or occasionally merely sensorineural hearing loss. Morphological investigations of the otosclerotic focus show all three phases of a chronic inflammation with bone resorption, formation of new bone and finally eburnation. Various hypotheses about the cause of inflammation were proposed in… Expand
Otosclerosis and Measles: Do Measles Have a Role in Otosclerosis? A Review Article
TLDR
The majority of the current literature supported the presence of the measles virus component in the otosclerotic stapes samples and its role in the etiopathogenesis of otosclerosis, but other studies have failed to show the presence. Expand
Etiopathogenesis of otosclerosis
The objectives of our study was to review our current knowledge of the etiopathogenesis of otosclerotic bone remodeling including genetics, viral infection, autoimmunity and inflammation and toExpand
Involvement of T-cell receptor-β alterations in the development of otosclerosis linked to OTSC2
TLDR
Analysis of the second otosclerosis locus on chromosome 7q34-36 (OTSC2), holding the T-cell receptor beta locus, implicate the TRB locus as the causative gene in the OTSC2 region and represents an important finding in the elucidation of the disease pathology. Expand
Otosclerosis 1: the aetiopathogenesis of otosclerosis
TLDR
The majority of studies on families with otosclerosis suggest an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance with incomplete penetrance, which is characterised by alternating phases of bone resorption and formation. Expand
AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF OTOSCLEROSIS: A CASE STUDY
Otosclerosis is one of the ear problems with which people are increasingly suffering. It affects the quality of life of the sufferer by inducing loss of hearing and often tinnitus leading to anxiety,Expand
Otolaryngological manifestations of Measles (Rubeola): A case report and brief review
TLDR
A case of an acute presentation of measles illness is presented and the otolaryngologic manifestation of the disease is discussed, which is an acute viral respiratory illness caused by a virus of the Paramyxoviridae family. Expand
Involvement of T cell receptor Beta alterations in the development of otosclerosis linked to OTSC 2 Running title : T cell receptor Beta alterations in otosclerosis
The authors wish it to be known that, in their opinion, the first 2 authors should be regarded as joint First Author. *corresponding author present address: Laboratory for Molecular Immunology andExpand
Avascular necrosis of stapes crura in one case of operated otosclerosis.
TLDR
Surgery with stapedotomy and stapes prosthesis implantation in a case of otosclerosis with avascular necrosis of stapes crura can be success therapy to improve patient's hearing. Expand
Unbiased Stereologic Estimation of the Spatial Distribution of Paget’s Disease in the Human Temporal Bone

  • 2014
TLDR
The aim of this study was to estimate the spatial distribution of pagetic bone remodeling around the inner ear space and to compare it with that of otosclerosis in a contemporary context of temporal bone dynamics. Expand
Viral Causes of Hearing Loss: A Review for Hearing Health Professionals
TLDR
Many of the viruses that cause hearing loss are outlined, their epidemiology, course, prevention, and treatment, and some can be prevented or treated. Expand

The influence of measles vaccination on the incidence of otosclerosis in Germany
TLDR
Between 1993 and 2004 the incidence of hospital treatments for otosclerosis decreased to a significantly greater extent in the vaccinated patients than in the unvaccinated patients, and it is concluded that there is a causal relationship between measles viruses and the development of Otosclerosis. Expand
Measles virus in otosclerosis and the specific immune response of the inner ear.
TLDR
Measles virus specific antibodies were detected in all of the perilymph samples from 19 patients suffering from otosclerosis, and the relative amount of these IgG antibodies was much higher than in serum samples of the same patients or inperilymph of control patients. Expand
Otosclerosis--an inflammatory disease of the otic capsule of viral aetiology?
TLDR
The results favour a viral aetiology of otosclerosis as an inflammatory vascular reaction of the otic capsule initiated or caused by the viruses of measles, rubella and mumps. Expand

TLDR
Four temporal bone specimens from patients with otosclerosis demonstrated positive specific reactivity with monoclonal antibodies to measles virus antigens using the indirect immunofluorescent and immunoperoxidase techniques, most intense in active foci. Expand
No Evidence of Measles Virus in Stapes Samples from Patients with Otosclerosis
TLDR
These highly sensitive methods could not evidence the presence of the measles virus in any of the bone samples or primary bone cell cultures, and the hypothesis of persistent measles virus infection in otosclerosis is not confirmed. Expand
Shift of the distribution of age in patients with otosclerosis.
TLDR
Data from this study strongly support the hypothesis of a measles virus involvement in otosclerosis and may reflect a decreased incidence of Otosclerosis in the generation of patients vaccinated against measles virus. Expand
[Immunohistochemical findings in otosclerotic lesions].
TLDR
It is found that a large fraction of the lymphoid cells are antigen-primed T-cells expressing an alpha/beta T-cell receptor in association with CD3 molecules on their surfaces, which is crucial for the initiation of a local immune response. Expand
Otosclerosis: A Synopsis of Natural History and Management
TLDR
Otosclerosis is a common, hereditary disease of the temporal bone, found predominantly in the part surrounding the labyrinth and cochlea, and can give rise to secondary sensorineural changes, both cochlear and vestibular, and this is referred to as co chlear otosclerosis. Expand
Nachweis von masern- und rötelnspezifischen Antigenen in der enchondralen Verknöcherungszone bei der Otosklerose
TLDR
There is considerable similarity of the histological features of active otosclerosis and Paget's disease and the probable presence of viral antigens in the otosclerotic footplate of the stapes of 15 patients has been investigated by means of immunohistochemical methods. Expand
A fifth locus for otosclerosis, OTSC5, maps to chromosome 3q22–24
TLDR
Otosclerosis can be considered a genetically complex disease, caused by an interaction of genes and environmental factors, but with rare monogenic forms, and a large Dutch family segregating an autosomal dominant otosclerosis is identified. Expand
