Although the knowledge of bone histology of non-avian theropods has advanced considerably in recent decades, data about the bone tissue patterns, growth dynamics and ontogeny of some taxa such as abelisauroids are still limited. Here we describe the bone microstructure and growth dynamics of the Brazilian noasaurine Vespersaurus paranaensis using five femora and six tibiae and quantify the annual growth marks through retrocalculation of missing ones to estimate ontogenetic ages. The femoral…

The phylogenetic analysis performed here has nested Berthasaura leopoldinae as an early-divergent Noasauridae, not closely related to Limusaurus, corroborating with an early evolutionary divergence of noasaurids from the ceratosaurian bauplan by disparate feeding modes.

Tissue organization and growth mark count varies across individual skeletal elements and reveal that the femur, tibia, and humerus had the highest annual apposition rates in each individual, confirming previous observations that lamellar and parallel fibered tissue organization are typical of crocodylians.
Physiological implications of the bone histology of Syntarsus rhodesiensis (Saurischia: Theropoda)

- 1990
The general bone histology is described initially and thereafter follow speculations on the animal's thermoregulatory ability, possible evidence for sexual dimorphism, and also the probable growth strategy it employed, as reflected in its bone Histology.

Phylogenetic optimization suggests that large theropods independently evolved reduced humeral, ulnar, and tibial lengths by a phyletic reduction in longitudinal growth relative to the femur.

The osteohistology of Sacisaurus agudoensis is similar to that of other silesaurids and supports previous hypotheses that rapid growth was attained early in the dinosauromorph lineage.

It is concluded that Maiasaura did not grow at all like living non-avian reptiles, which cannot be considered informative models for most aspects of dinosaurian growth (or physiology, to the extent that growth rates reflect metabolism).

Growth curve of Psittacosaurus mongoliensis Osborn (Ceratopsia: Psittacosauridae) inferred from long bone histology
- Geography, Environmental Science
- 2000
The first reconstruction of a growth curve (mass vs. age) for a dinosaur was made for this taxon using a new method called Developmental Mass Extrapolation, and the results suggest P. mongoliensis had an S-shaped growth curve characteristics of most extant vertebrates, and had maximal growth rates that exceeded extant reptiles and marsupials, but were slower than most avian and eutherian taxa.
Longbone histology of the Tendaguru sauropods: implications for growth and biology

A new sampling technique for fossil bone (coring with a 5/8” bit) was used to sample longbones of all four sauropod genera from the Upper Jurassic Tendaguru beds of Tanzania for paleohistological study, showing a common growth pattern in which growth is determinate but sexual maturity is achieved well before maximum size is reached.
Bone Histology Confirms Determinate Growth and Small Body Size in the Noasaurid Theropod Masiakasaurus knopfleri
- Environmental Science, Geography
- 2013
It is confirmed that Masiakasaurus grew determinately, matured at small body size, and is not the juvenile form of a larger-bodied theropod, and may have evolved as a means to minimize structural and maintenance costs while living in a semiarid and seasonally stressful environment.
Variation in dinosaur skeletochronology indicators: implications for age assessment and physiology
- Environmental Science, BiologyPaleobiology

Twelve different bones from the skeleton of the holotype specimen of the hadrosaurian dinosaur Hypacrosaurus stebingeri were thin-sectioned to evaluate the significance of lines of arrested growth (LAGs) in age assessments, finding the tibia was found to have experienced the least amount of reconstruction, but was still not optimal for skeletochronology.
