BACKGROUND The initial identification of osteoactivin (OA) came from studies using an animal model of osteopetrosis in rats. Several recent studies suggested roles for OA in osteoblast differentiation, fibroblast differentiation, cancer metastasis, and attenuation of muscle, liver, and kidney injury-induced degeneration.
