The main problem associated with somatic embryo (SE) formation from mature plant explants is their low embryogenic competence. Kalopanax septemlobus (Thunb.) Koidz is a timber-yielding medicinal tree that is recalcitrant to somatic embryogenesis from explants derived from mature trees.
